We are approaching a world where online digital communities will increasingly entrench people rather than localities. This does not necessarily mean that geography, nationality, ethnicity, or regional identity disappears. Instead, another layer is forming over them: transnational communities organized primarily around affiliation rather than physical proximity.
Historically, place organized people. Your town, neighborhood, church, workplace, school, ethnic enclave, and nation determined who you repeatedly interacted with. Geography created community almost automatically. The people around you became the people you knew, argued with, learned from, married, worked beside, competed against, and developed culture with. Physical proximity created repeated interaction, and repeated interaction produced community.
The internet begins reversing that relationship. Increasingly, affinity organizes people, while geography becomes secondary. Someone in Jackson, Lagos, London, and Toronto can inhabit essentially the same cultural environment every day. They can follow the same creators, repeat the same memes, use the same slang, participate in the same political conversations, recognize the same celebrities, adopt the same aesthetics, understand the same controversies, and even dislike the same enemies. Eventually, geographically distant people can understand one another’s cultural references better than they understand the person living three houses away.
Sports already demonstrate how this works. Think about being a Lakers fan. You do not have to live in Los Angeles to belong to the Lakers community. The Lakers function as a nonterritorial social institution whose membership extends far beyond Los Angeles. There are symbols, colors, heroes, historical memories, rituals, rivalries, membership claims, internal status distinctions, gathering places, and collective emotional events. Millions of geographically scattered people can temporarily behave as one social body.
Now imagine that mechanism expanding beyond entertainment.
An online community could eventually provide culture, reputation, commerce, education, matchmaking, employment networks, mutual aid, political organization, dispute resolution, and eventually forms of quasi-governance. At that point, calling it an “online community” starts becoming inadequate. You are describing something closer to a nonterritorial polity: a social body whose members may be geographically scattered but increasingly share institutions, norms, relationships, interests, and systems of organization.
This is where Innerpolar becomes important. Communities develop shared language, customs, memories, symbols, norms, heroes, enemies, and expectations, producing culture. Mature cultures begin creating institutions. And once institutions begin establishing rules, distributing resources, determining status, resolving disputes, organizing collective action, and regulating membership, you have begun approaching governance.
The progression is therefore:
Affinity → Algorithmic Concentration → Community → Culture → Institutions → Governance
The historical question that once mattered most was:
Where are you from?
The emerging question may increasingly become:
What are you part of?
This does not mean the first question disappears. You could be American territorially, Black American ethnoculturally, Mississippian regionally, and simultaneously belong to several completely transnational digital societies. These affiliations would exist as overlapping layers rather than necessarily replacing one another.
The sports analogy reveals something even more interesting: territory does not necessarily disappear. It can become symbolic. The Lakers still have Los Angeles. Manchester United still has Manchester. But the social territory of either institution extends enormously beyond its physical territory. Their geographic homes become symbolic capitals for communities distributed across the world.
Digital communities could develop something similar. Their “capital city” might not be a city at all. It could be a subreddit, Discord server, platform, game world, creator ecosystem, forum, or eventually some persistent AI-mediated digital environment. The community would still have territory in a meaningful sense, except that the territory would consist of digital space rather than contiguous physical land.
In that sense, the server becomes a kind of territory.

Eventually, these digital poles can become powerful enough that physical neighbors share geography while distant strangers share social reality.
That may be the larger transformation occurring beneath what we casually call social media. We are not merely connecting people across greater distances.
We may be witnessing the gradual separation of community from geography.
Before the internet, city and regional cultures in Black America were a lot individualistic. Each city/region had its own variation and thing going on. Internet merged it all together and added an overlay to the shell while the core remained intact.
The deeper shift is that AI algorithms may become a quiet layer of governance without ever looking like government. They increasingly influence what people see, who they meet, what ideas gain legitimacy, which communities grow, what behavior is rewarded, what products are discovered, what opportunities surface, and even what people come to believe is normal or possible. As these systems become embedded in education, employment, finance, entertainment, communication, and public life, they begin shaping the environment in which decisions are made rather than simply making decisions themselves. The power is subtle but enormous: whoever structures the algorithmic environment can indirectly influence culture, markets, institutions, and collective behavior at scale. In that sense, AI governance may not begin with laws or borders, but with control over attention, ranking, recommendation, access, and visibility.
