Not all cats are the same, even though they belong to the same biological family. A house cat, a lion, and a tiger are all felines, but they differ in size, behavior, environment, and instinct. Their shared classification tells us something, but it does not tell us everything.
“Cat” can describe both a specific animal and a broader biological family. Domestic cats, lions, tigers, leopards, and cheetahs all belong to the family Felidae, but they are not the same species and do not share the same size, behavior, habitat, or instincts. A house cat is a feline, and a tiger is also a feline, yet a tiger is not a domestic cat. In other words, all domestic cats are felines, but not all felines are domestic cats. The shared category shows a connection, not sameness.
The same is true of Black people.
Sharing a race does not mean sharing one personality, one culture, one political belief, one life story, or one set of values. Black people may be connected by history, identity, or common experiences, yet each person is still shaped by family, faith, geography, education, opportunity, pain, ambition, and choice.
Too often, one Black person is judged by the behavior of another. An individual’s mistake becomes evidence against an entire community, while an individual’s success is treated as an exception. This kind of thinking reduces millions of distinct human beings to a single stereotype.
A broad label may describe where people belong, but it cannot fully explain who they are. Even members of the same family are not interchangeable. They may share blood, traditions, or a last name, yet still grow into very different people.
So yes, there may be a shared category, but there is no single mold. Blackness is not one experience, one voice, or one way of being. We may recognize one another as part of a larger family, but we are not copies of one another.
Using “cat” to mean all members of the cat family is semantic broadening. If one member of a group is used to represent the whole group, that can also be called synecdoche.
Imperial systems favor broad categories for administration but the truth is we are not all from the same litter.
