Reparations are supposed to be about repair.
What we’re seeing instead is extraction with a moral gloss.
There’s a growing ecosystem forming around Black America where our history, trauma, and claims are treated like a renewable resource — something to be mined, managed, and redistributed around us rather than to us.
That ecosystem looks like this:
• intermediaries
• administrators
• nonprofits
• consultants
• academic pipelines
• political brokers
• cultural translators
All positioned between Black America and the actual material outcome.
That’s the Golden Fleece.
Everyone wants to wear it.
Very few want to return the sheep.
How the Extraction Works
- Black suffering is converted into abstract language
Trauma becomes “disparity,” “equity,” “inclusion,” or “harm.” - Abstract language becomes funding streams
Grants, initiatives, studies, committees, and symbolic gestures. - Funding circulates outward
Salaries, institutions, conferences, NGOs, and political capital grow. - Black America remains structurally unchanged
Same asset gap.
Same landlessness.
Same dependency.
Same precarity.
The fleece keeps getting heavier.
The body it was taken from stays cold.
Reparations vs. Redistribution Theater
Reparations are not:
- vibes
- apologies
- symbolic acknowledgments
- diversity programs
- cross-group benefit schemes
- “everyone impacted” frameworks
Those are redistribution theater — designed to diffuse claims until nothing specific can be owed to anyone in particular.
Reparations are:
- lineage-based
- materially measurable
- historically anchored
- politically inconvenient
- legally uncomfortable
Which is exactly why the system avoids them.
Why Black America Is Especially Vulnerable
Because Black America is:
- culturally influential
- historically wronged
- administratively flattened
- symbolically useful
- and politically fragmented
That makes us the perfect resource population.
Our identity becomes currency.
Our pain becomes justification.
Our name opens doors we’re not allowed to walk through.
The Quiet Shift
Notice how:
- “Black” becomes universalized
- lineage becomes optional
- specificity becomes “divisive”
- clarity becomes “gatekeeping”
This isn’t progress.
It’s claim dilution.
When everyone can speak for Black America, no one has to pay Black America.
The Core Problem
An extraction economy cannot deliver reparations.
It can only:
- manage demands
- delay outcomes
- redirect benefits
- and stabilize the system that caused the harm
That’s not justice.
That’s maintenance.
One Line to Sit With
If reparations don’t materially consolidate Black American power, assets, and autonomy, then someone else is wearing the Golden Fleece.
And history says they usually are.
The 3rd Option people fail to think of is we can create our own economy and exosystem if we can create our own Reparations. We have to xlose the extraction loop and the centers that channel Black power outside of our ecosystem. Our current ecosystem is barren and what does grow is quickly extracted. It is like cultivating a garden but we need a greenhouse. A closed loop.
I personally think we need a closed looped system that recirculates the Black dollar within the community.
I see Black power as a river, this river have blockages and there are multiple dams redirecting this flow into mini reservoirs that support the development and growth around the reservoir but extracts it from the river.
We get caught up in supporting issues that weaken Black Power and this Black America.
We need to redirect the flow of this river and stop the leakages from spilling.
One major leakage is the black dollar. The black dollar only circulates <24hrs in the Black Community in comparison to other communities that last from 20-30 days.
If we got reparations today, other entities would be multi billions overnight. We need the social, economic, political, legal, and financial infrastructure in place to create this ecosystem that allows Black America to grow.
