TLDR: Black American culture (and cultural tokens) is used as a medium for other ethnic groups to expressive their cultures.
Most of us have heard this claim at some point that Black Americans “have no culture”
It develops from a misunderstanding of how culture circulates and becomes naturalized in multi-ethnic societies. Cultural forms produced by one group can become so widely adopted that their origins are obscured.
Black Americans have generated foundational expressive forms in music, language, performance, aesthetics, rhythm, and social codes but over time, these forms were incorporated into what is now considered mainstream American culture.
Once a cultural form becomes normalized as the general mode of expression, people stop perceiving it as belonging to the group that created it.
This process is known as de-ethnicization
At the same time, other groups often use Black American cultural expression as a medium for their own identity performances.
In cultural theory, this is referred to as symbolic enactment. People do not necessarily try to become Black rather, they use Black cultural forms as a vehicle for expressing rebellion, authenticity, confidence, or modernity.
This happens because Black cultural expression carries strong symbolic associations in the American imagination. Instead of developing new expressive codes, many groups adopt Black American cultural language (linguistic, musical, aesthetic, and emotional) and map their own identities onto it or express their identities through that medium.
However, when the expressive language of a group becomes the language others use to express themselves, the origin of the cultural pattern becomes invisibilized. The form remains, but its authorship is forgotten or intentionally ignored. As these forms spread globally, they are reframed Once this happens, the originators are mistakenly viewed as lacking culture because their cultural contributions have been absorbed into a wider cultural field without acknowledgment.
So the idea that Black Americans have no culture does not come from an absence of cultural creation. It comes from cultural saturation via adoption or imposition.
The culture is everywhere globally and because it is everywhere people no longer attribute it to the group who created it.
The accusation reflects cultural erasure. The culture was so influential, it became the common expressive medium for others and therefore its authorship was obscured.
People want to delegitimize and not credit Black Americans out of a disrespect for their culture and cultural tokens. Black Americans are accused of lacking culture precisely because the culture became the blueprint in such a way that others need to strip it of its origin to feel comfortable using it or absorb it into a larger framework to attribute its origins to a collective diasporic origin point.
In any case,
We Remember 🖤🔱❤️
