I just realized we might be the only group that gets emulated the way we do.
When Asian groups immigrate, they don’t suddenly start speaking like other Asian groups. Chinese don’t mimic Korean mannerisms. Vietnamese don’t adopt Japanese fashion or slang to “fit.”
Each community arrives with a strong internal identity, and they maintain very clear boundaries between one another. They build their own enclaves, grocery stores, banks, religious spaces, and cultural networks. They integrate strategically, but they don’t dissolve.
Meanwhile, you can look at recent Afro-immigrant communities and see something different. A lot of them end up mirroring Black American speech, fashion, humor, and cultural codes almost instantly. And I don’t even think it’s intentional. I know many African cultures produce people who are highly adaptive. They’re extremely good at reading social environments, adjusting tone, switching codes, and blending in.
That’s not inherently negative. It’s just a different cultural orientation.
Some cultures fully integrate. Some cultures fully assimilate. Some cultures insulate themselves and create mini homelands abroad. And some cultures have to fight just to keep a sense of continuity.
Black American culture is so foundational and expressive that it becomes a default in multicultural spaces. Other groups plug into it as a way to navigate social life here. It’s a medium.
I think I’ve reached a conclusion that gives me a sense of understanding and peace. Black American culture functions as a sort of Cultural Superstrate and the Social Lingua Franca of the United States.
I don’t think we fully understand what that means yet but the realization hit me.
We aren’t just participating in culture. We are a culture that other groups orient themselves around.
Do you all understand the gravity of this?
We have a lot of cleaning up to do but acting in the position of medium it situates us in a very peculiar position globally that probably hasn’t been scaled like this before.
The Romans indeed conquered the Greeks materially but it was the Greeks that conquered and outlived the Romans culturally. We have seen this too with the Moors of Iberia.
I do wonder what the future holds
